The sacramental life of the Church extends itself in the role of the Priest. It is the priest, as a sharer in Christ’s priesthood, who is not only able to offer the Sacrifice of the Mass, but is also able to extend the healing mercy of God in the Sacraments of Penance and Anointing of the Sick. I think the Reformed concept of the atonement refers not only to Christ’s Passion and death, but also his descent into hell, which they believe to be Gehenna.
